Course Overview
What You'll Learn

Rigging is the safe lifting, moving, and positioning of heavy loads using equipment such as slings, shackles, chains, jacks, hoists, and winches. It is a foundational skill across mining, construction, manufacturing, ports and shipping, and events, where incorrectly rigged loads are one of the leading causes of serious workplace injury.

DT Academy offers both Basic and Advanced Rigging training, aligned to TETA-registered unit standards. Basic Rigging is a 3-day course covering the inspection, selection, and safe use of lifting tackle to lift, move, lower, and stack loads — the essential starting point for anyone new to rigging work. Advanced Rigging is a 5-day course that builds on this foundation with complex lifting techniques, steel wire rope work, load charts, and crane-assisted lifting operations, preparing you for more senior rigging and lifting-crew roles.

Because Advanced Rigging builds directly on Basic Rigging, we recommend completing Basic Rigging first, or enrolling in both courses back to back — many students book their Advanced course before finishing Basic Rigging to avoid a gap between sessions.

Rigging is one of several programmes offered under our Health & Safety training field, alongside First Aid, Fire Fighting, Safety Officer, and Scaffolding courses. DT Academy also offers training in three other fields — Mining & Machinery, Lifting Machinery, and Security Training — from the same Pretoria Central campus.

  • Statutory and legislative safety requirements for lifting operations
  • Rigging equipment identification and safe working load calculations
  • Inspecting slings, shackles, chains, and lifting tackle
  • Basic slinging and hitching techniques
  • Steel wire rope inspection and use (Advanced)
  • Load charts and asymmetrical load sling calculations (Advanced)
  • Crane-assisted lifting and banksman signalling (Advanced)

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Basic and Advanced Rigging training, prerequisites, and on-site training.
What is the difference between Basic and Advanced Rigging?
Basic Rigging covers the inspection, selection, and safe use of lifting tackle such as slings, shackles, and chains to lift, move, lower, and stack loads. Advanced Rigging builds on this with complex lifting techniques, steel wire rope work, load charts, asymmetrical load calculations, and crane-assisted lifting operations.
Do I need to complete Basic Rigging before Advanced Rigging?
Yes. Advanced Rigging builds directly on the skills and knowledge covered in Basic Rigging, so Basic Rigging (or equivalent verified experience) is a prerequisite before enrolling in the Advanced course.
How long are the Basic and Advanced Rigging courses?
Basic Rigging runs over 3 days, covering theory, lifting tackle inspection, and practical slinging exercises. Advanced Rigging runs over 5 days, covering more complex lifting techniques, load charts, and crane-assisted lifting practicals.
Do I need experience to enrol in Basic Rigging?
No prior rigging experience is required for Basic Rigging. You will need a valid form of identification and the ability to read and write English, since safety documentation and load charts require accurate interpretation.
What topics are covered in Basic Rigging?
Basic Rigging covers statutory and legislative safety requirements, rigging equipment identification, safe working load calculations, inspecting slings and lifting tackle, and basic slinging and hitching techniques for lifting, moving, lowering, and stacking loads.
What topics are covered in Advanced Rigging?
Advanced Rigging covers steel wire rope inspection and use, load charts and safe working load calculations for complex lifts, asymmetrical load sling calculations, multi-point and critical lift planning, banksman and crane signalling, and crane-assisted lifting operations.
Is the certificate recognised by employers?
Yes. Our rigging courses are aligned to TETA-registered unit standards and recognised by employers in mining, construction, manufacturing, and ports and shipping across South Africa.
Is accommodation really free?
Yes. Students travelling from outside Pretoria are housed at no extra cost for the full duration of either course.
Do you offer on-site training for companies?
Yes. On-site Basic and Advanced Rigging training is available on request for mining, construction, and industrial companies that want to train or upskill groups of riggers and lifting crews at their own site.
What jobs can I apply for after completing Rigging training?
Basic Rigging qualifies you for entry-level roles such as assistant rigger or slinger. Advanced Rigging opens up roles such as rigger, banksman or signaller, and lifting crew member in mining, construction, manufacturing, and ports and shipping.
