Course Overview
What You'll Learn

Fire Fighting training prepares employees, health and safety representatives, and designated fire marshals or wardens to prevent, contain, and safely extinguish incipient-stage fires in the workplace. The course is aligned to the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, which requires employers to designate and train sufficient employees to act as fire fighters or fire marshals and to conduct regular fire drills, and to SAQA Unit Standard 12484, which covers the application of firefighting techniques.

This is a practical, hands-on course rather than a professional firefighter recruitment programme. It is designed to give workplace teams — from mining and industrial sites to warehouses, offices, and security teams — the confidence to respond correctly to a fire emergency until professional Fire and Rescue Services arrive. Becoming a career firefighter with a metro or provincial fire brigade requires a separate recruitment and training pathway outside the scope of this course.

The 3-day programme combines classroom theory on fire behaviour, classes of fire, and relevant legislation with two full days of practical training, including live-fire extinguishing exercises using different types of portable extinguishers, hose reel and hydrant operation, and a simulated evacuation drill.

Fire Fighting is one of several programmes offered under our Health & Safety training field, alongside First Aid, Safety Officer, Scaffolding, and Rigging courses. DT Academy also offers training in three other fields — Mining & Machinery, Lifting Machinery, and Security Training — from the same Pretoria Central campus.

  • The fire triangle and classes of fire (A, B, C and electrical)
  • Relevant OHS Act legislation and employer responsibilities
  • Selecting and using the correct portable fire extinguisher
  • Hose reel and fire hydrant operation
  • Basic breathing apparatus awareness
  • Workplace fire risk identification and prevention
  • Evacuation procedures and fire drill coordination

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Fire Fighting training, on-site training, and refresher courses.
What is Fire Fighting training?
Fire Fighting training equips employees and designated fire marshals or wardens with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prevent, contain, and extinguish incipient-stage fires in the workplace, and to manage safe evacuation until professional emergency services arrive.
Does this course train me to become a professional firefighter?
No. This course trains workplace fire marshals, wardens, and emergency response team members to respond to fires on their own premises. Becoming a professional municipal firefighter requires a separate recruitment and training pathway through a metro or provincial Fire and Rescue Service.
How long is the Fire Fighting course?
The course runs over 3 days, covering fire theory and legislation, classes of fire, portable extinguisher use, and advanced techniques such as hose reel and hydrant operation, followed by a practical evacuation drill and final assessment.
Is fire fighting training a legal requirement in South Africa?
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and its General Safety Regulations, employers must designate and train sufficient employees to act as fire fighters or fire marshals, and must conduct fire drills at regular intervals, generally at least twice a year.
Do I need experience to enrol?
No prior firefighting experience is required. The course is designed for general employees, health and safety representatives, and anyone appointed as a fire marshal or warden in their workplace.
What topics are covered in the course?
Topics include the fire triangle and classes of fire, relevant OHS Act legislation, selecting and using portable fire extinguishers, hose reel and hydrant operation, basic breathing apparatus awareness, workplace fire risk identification, and evacuation procedures.
Will I get hands-on practice with real fire?
Yes. The practical days include live fire extinguishing exercises using different types of portable extinguishers, supervised throughout by qualified instructors to ensure safe, controlled conditions.
Is accommodation really free?
Yes. Students travelling from outside Pretoria are housed at no extra cost for the duration of the 3-day course.
Do you offer on-site training for companies?
Yes. On-site fire fighting training is available on request for companies that need to train fire marshals, wardens, or emergency response teams in groups at their own premises, using their own fire equipment where applicable.
Can I do refresher training if I'm already a trained fire marshal?
Yes. We offer refresher training for previously trained fire marshals and wardens who need to renew their skills and remain compliant with workplace fire safety requirements.
