Lift, Sling & Rig Safely
Master the safe lifting, moving, and positioning of heavy loads. Start with Basic Rigging and progress straight into Advanced Rigging for complex, crane-assisted lifting operations.
Rigging is the safe lifting, moving, and positioning of heavy loads using equipment such as slings, shackles, chains, jacks, hoists, and winches. It is a foundational skill across mining, construction, manufacturing, ports and shipping, and events, where incorrectly rigged loads are one of the leading causes of serious workplace injury.
DT Academy offers both Basic and Advanced Rigging training, aligned to TETA-registered unit standards. Basic Rigging is a 3-day course covering the inspection, selection, and safe use of lifting tackle to lift, move, lower, and stack loads — the essential starting point for anyone new to rigging work. Advanced Rigging is a 5-day course that builds on this foundation with complex lifting techniques, steel wire rope work, load charts, and crane-assisted lifting operations, preparing you for more senior rigging and lifting-crew roles.
Because Advanced Rigging builds directly on Basic Rigging, we recommend completing Basic Rigging first, or enrolling in both courses back to back — many students book their Advanced course before finishing Basic Rigging to avoid a gap between sessions.
Rigging is one of several programmes offered under our Health & Safety training field, alongside First Aid, Fire Fighting, Safety Officer, and Scaffolding courses. DT Academy also offers training in three other fields — Mining & Machinery, Lifting Machinery, and Security Training — from the same Pretoria Central campus.

- Inspecting slings, shackles, chains, and lifting tackle
- Basic slinging and hitching techniques
- Steel wire rope inspection and use (Advanced)
- Load charts and asymmetrical load sling calculations (Advanced)
- Crane-assisted lifting and banksman signalling (Advanced)
Course Information
3 Day Curriculum
Legislation, Safety & Equipment Identification
Statutory and legislative safety requirements for lifting operations, identifying rigging equipment such as slings, shackles, chains, and hooks, and understanding safe working load (SWL) markings and limits.
Lifting Tackle Inspection & Basic Slinging
Hands-on inspection of slings and lifting tackle to identify damage or wear, basic slinging and hitching techniques, and correct attachment methods to keep loads controlled and secure during a lift.
Lift, Move, Lower & Stack Practicals
Supervised practical exercises lifting, moving, lowering, and stacking loads using correct rigging procedures, followed by a final practical and written competency assessment.
5 Day Curriculum
Advanced Legislation & Steel Wire Rope
Recap of rigging legislation at an advanced level, steel wire rope construction, inspection, and safe use, and identifying wear and damage that would take a wire rope out of service.
Load Charts & Complex Lift Calculations
Reading and applying crane and lifting equipment load charts, asymmetrical load sling angle calculations, centre of gravity considerations, and planning for multi-point lifts.
Rigging Plans & Critical Lift Practicals
Developing and interpreting rigging and lifting plans, hands-on practice with complex slinging configurations, and preparing for critical lifts involving multiple attachment points.
Crane-Assisted Lifting & Signalling
Working alongside crane and lifting machinery operators, banksman and signaller hand and radio signalling, and supervised crane-assisted lifting exercises under instructor guidance.
Scenario Assessment & Final Exam
Independent scenario-based practical assessment covering complex rigging and lifting procedures, final written examination, and certification briefing.
On-Site Training for Companies
Need to train or upskill an entire lifting crew at once? On-site Basic and Advanced Rigging training is available on request — our instructors come to your site, using your own lifting equipment where applicable, so your team trains in the environment they'll actually work in.
