Become A Fire Fighter
Become a competent workplace fire marshal or emergency response team member. Learn fire theory, extinguisher use, and advanced firefighting techniques through hands-on, live-fire practical training.
Fire Fighting training prepares employees, health and safety representatives, and designated fire marshals or wardens to prevent, contain, and safely extinguish incipient-stage fires in the workplace. The course is aligned to the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, which requires employers to designate and train sufficient employees to act as fire fighters or fire marshals and to conduct regular fire drills, and to SAQA Unit Standard 12484, which covers the application of firefighting techniques.
This is a practical, hands-on course rather than a professional firefighter recruitment programme. It is designed to give workplace teams — from mining and industrial sites to warehouses, offices, and security teams — the confidence to respond correctly to a fire emergency until professional Fire and Rescue Services arrive. Becoming a career firefighter with a metro or provincial fire brigade requires a separate recruitment and training pathway outside the scope of this course.
The 3-day programme combines classroom theory on fire behaviour, classes of fire, and relevant legislation with two full days of practical training, including live-fire extinguishing exercises using different types of portable extinguishers, hose reel and hydrant operation, and a simulated evacuation drill.
Fire Fighting is one of several programmes offered under our Health & Safety training field, alongside First Aid, Safety Officer, Scaffolding, and Rigging courses. DT Academy also offers training in three other fields — Mining & Machinery, Lifting Machinery, and Security Training — from the same Pretoria Central campus.
