Operate A Roller
Learn safe soil and asphalt compaction technique on vibratory rollers.
Our Roller Operator Training course gives you the practical skills to compact soil, gravel and asphalt to a professional, engineered standard. Whether you're building a road base, compacting a mine haul road, or finishing an asphalt surface, this 5-day intensive course prepares you for real-world demands.
The course is split into two days of classroom theory — covering machine systems, compaction theory and safety regulations — followed by three full days of hands-on practical training, operating a real roller on-site under close instructor supervision. This structure gives you enough repetition on the controls to build genuine confidence before your final assessment.
Roller training is one of sixteen machine operator courses offered under our Mining & Machinery training field, alongside programmes such as Grader, Front End Loader, Excavator and ADT Dump Truck operator training. Many students combine Roller training with Grader training to cover a complete road-building skill set.
The course also covers pass-count and lift-thickness technique, edge and confined-space compaction, and daily maintenance routines — giving you the complete skill set employers expect from a certified roller operator. If you're weighing up training options beyond machinery, DT Academy also offers Lifting Machinery, Security Training, and Health & Safety courses from the same Pretoria Central campus.
- Vibratory drum operation and control
- Soil compaction technique and moisture awareness
- Asphalt compaction and surface finishing

On-Site Practical — Basic Controls & Rolling Passes
Hands-on cab familiarisation on-site. Basic movements and steering. Straight-line rolling passes at low vibration. Spatial awareness and pedestrian safety.
On-Site Practical — Advanced Compaction
Edge and confined-space rolling. Slope and gradient compaction. Asphalt compaction technique and finishing passes. Quality checks and density awareness. Emergency procedures.
Practical Assessment & Certification
Independent, on-site practical competency evaluation covering all learned skills. Oral assessment on safety and maintenance knowledge. Certificate and operator licence card briefing, plus job application guidance and job assistance programme enrolment.
On-Site Training for Companies
Need to certify several employees at once? On-site roller training is available on request — our instructors come to your premises, road project, or mine site to train your team, reducing downtime and travel. This option suits road contractors, civil firms, and mines with an existing fleet.

Certificate & Operator Card Renewal
Certificates and operator licence cards issued by DT Academy are valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Once your certificate expires, it can be renewed at a cost — and because renewal doesn't require repeating the full course, our team can usually process it in the same visit.
Ask About RenewalWho Should Attend
- Job seekers wanting an entry point into road construction or civil engineering
- Existing general workers or labourers looking to move into a machine operator role
- Company employees who need to be certified on a roller they'll use at work
- Experienced operators needing a formal, QCTO-aligned certificate for the first time
- Anyone whose roller certificate or operator card has expired and needs renewal
Career Opportunities After Certification
- Roller / Compaction Operator on a road or civil project
- Plant Operator on a construction site
- Haul Road Maintenance Operator on a mine
- Asphalt Surfacing Crew Operator
- Earthworks Contractor Operator
