Reach Stacker Operator
Train to operate reach stackers for container handling at ports, freight terminals, and logistics depots.
Our Reach Stacker Operator Training course equips you to command the giants of the container yard. Reach stackers are the backbone of intermodal freight — capable of lifting 45-tonne shipping containers, stacking them five high, and manoeuvring through tight yard lanes with the precision of a surgeon. From Durban Harbour to the inland terminals of Gauteng, reach stacker operators keep South Africa's trade arteries flowing.
The course is an intensive 1-week programme combining classroom theory on container types, spreader mechanics, and yard management systems with hands-on practical training on a real reach stacker. You will learn telescopic boom control, twist-lock engagement, multi-tier stacking sequences, and yard navigation under the guidance of instructors with port and logistics terminal experience.
Reach stacker certification is a gateway to some of the most stable and well-paid positions in the logistics sector. Unlike many seasonal construction roles, port and depot work offers year-round employment with shift patterns that suit every lifestyle. Many of our graduates work at Transnet facilities, private container terminals, and major freight forwarding operations.
The course also covers container inspection protocols, hazardous cargo awareness, and coordination with truck drivers and vessel loading crews. If you are exploring broader career paths, DT Academy also offers Forklift, Mobile Crane, and Truck Mounted Crane operator training, plus Mining Machinery, Security Training, and Health & Safety courses from the same Pretoria Central campus.
