Course Overview
What You'll Learn

Our Grader Operator Training course gives you the practical skills to shape and maintain roads, camber and drainage to a professional standard. Whether you're building gravel access roads on a mine, maintaining haul roads, or grading municipal streets, this 5-day intensive course prepares you for real-world demands.

The course is split into two days of classroom theory — covering machine systems, blade mechanics, grading theory and safety regulations — followed by three full days of hands-on practical training, operating a real motor grader on-site under close instructor supervision. This structure gives you enough repetition on the controls to build genuine confidence before your final assessment.

Grader training is one of sixteen machine operator courses offered under our Mining & Machinery training field, alongside programmes such as Front End Loader, 777 Rigid Dump Truck, Excavator and ADT Dump Truck operator training. Many students combine Grader training with a related earthmoving course to broaden their employability.

The course also covers ripping and scarifying hard surfaces, reading survey pegs and grade stakes, and daily maintenance routines — giving you the complete skill set employers expect from a certified grader operator. If you're weighing up training options beyond machinery, DT Academy also offers Lifting Machinery, Security Training, and Health & Safety courses from the same Pretoria Central campus.

  • Blade control, angle and side-shift adjustment
  • Camber and road crown shaping
  • Drainage and ditch cutting
  • Ripping and scarifying hard material
  • Working to survey pegs and grade stakes
  • Articulation and steering technique
  • Safety protocols & hazard identification

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the grader course, on-site training and certificate renewal.
Do I need a driver's licence to enrol?
No driver's licence is required to enrol in grader operator training. You will need a valid form of identification (ID or passport).
How is the 5-day course structured?
The course runs over 5 days: 2 days of classroom theory covering machine systems, controls and safety, followed by 3 days of hands-on practical training on-site, operating a real motor grader under instructor supervision.
What's the difference between a grader and other earthmoving machines?
A grader uses a long blade to fine-shape and level surfaces such as roads, camber, and drainage ditches, while machines like excavators and loaders focus on digging and bulk material handling. Many students combine grader training with a related course — see our Front End Loader or Excavator pages for details.
Is the certificate recognised by mining and construction companies?
Yes. Our certificates are QCTO-aligned and recognised by mining companies, road construction firms, municipalities, and civil contractors across South Africa.
How long is my certificate valid, and can I renew it?
Certificates and operator licence cards issued by DT Academy are valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Once expired, they can be renewed at a cost, and because renewal doesn't require repeating the full course, our team can usually process it in the same visit.
Do you offer on-site training for companies?
Yes. On-site grader training is available on request for companies who want to train groups of employees at their own premises, mine site, or road project.
Can I do refresher training if I already have experience?
Yes. We offer refresher courses for experienced operators who need to sharpen their skills on motor graders, separate from a formal certificate renewal.
Is accommodation really free?
Yes. Students travelling from outside Pretoria are housed at no extra cost for the duration of the 5-day course.
What happens if I don't pass the practical assessment?
DT Academy has a 100% pass rate for students who complete the full course. Additional practical time is provided at no extra charge if needed.
How soon can I start working after certification?
Most graduates begin applying for positions immediately after receiving their certificate. Our job assistance programme helps connect you with employers in road construction, mining, and civil engineering.
