Course Overview
What You'll Learn

Our Firearm Competency Training course prepares you for the proficiency stage that South African law requires before you may apply to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for a Firearm Competency Certificate. Under the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, every applicant must first complete accredited training in the compulsory "Knowledge of the Act" unit standard, along with the unit standard for each firearm category they wish to own — handgun, shotgun, manually operated rifle, or self-loading rifle.

Training is delivered by PFTC-accredited instructors and combines classroom theory on the law, safe storage, and responsible ownership with supervised practical handling and range time for each firearm category you choose. On successful completion, you receive a proficiency training certificate and Statement of Results, which you then submit to SAPS with your SAPS 517 application for a Competency Certificate.

You can train for a single firearm category over 3 days, or combine 2 or 3 categories into one 5-day sitting at a discounted combined rate — a popular option for hunters, sport shooters, and security professionals who need more than one firearm type licensed. Firearm Competency Training is one of the specialist programmes offered under our Security Training field, alongside our PSIRA Grade E, D, C, B, and A courses.

Please note that training is only the first of three steps toward legally owning a firearm: proficiency (this course), competency (SAPS 517 application), and licensing (SAPS 271 application). If you are exploring other training options, DT Academy also offers Mining & Machinery, Lifting Machinery, and Health & Safety courses from the same Pretoria Central campus.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Firearm Competency Training, the combo option, and what comes after.
How long is the Firearm Competency Training course?
Training for a single firearm category takes 3 days. Training for 2 or 3 firearm categories (a combo) is completed in 5 days, at a discounted combined rate compared to booking each category on its own.
What is the difference between proficiency, competency, and a firearm licence?
Proficiency training, done at DT Academy, proves you can safely handle a firearm and know the Firearms Control Act. Competency is a certificate issued by SAPS after you apply using your proficiency results. A firearm licence is issued by SAPS afterwards for a specific firearm. Training is the first of these three steps.
Which firearm categories can I train for?
We offer training in handgun, shotgun, manually operated rifle, and self-loading rifle, each built on the compulsory Knowledge of the Act unit standard. You can train for one category over 3 days, or combine 2 or 3 categories into a 5-day discounted course.
What are the age and citizenship requirements?
Applicants must generally be at least 21 years old and a South African citizen or permanent resident. Applicants under 21 may still train, but will need to submit compelling reasons and often dedicated hunting or sport shooting status when applying to SAPS for competency.
Do I still need to apply to SAPS after completing training?
Yes. Completing training gives you a proficiency certificate and Statement of Results. You then apply to SAPS using the SAPS 517 form for your Competency Certificate, and once that is issued, the SAPS 271 form for your firearm licence.
How long is a competency certificate valid for?
Validity generally follows the licence it supports: 5 years for self-defence (Section 13) licences, and 10 years for occasional or dedicated hunting and sport shooting licences. Renewal applications should be submitted at least 90 days before expiry.
Is the combo training really cheaper than booking separately?
Yes. Training 2 or 3 firearm categories together in the same 5-day sitting is priced at a discounted combined rate compared to paying for each 3-day single-category course individually.
Do you offer on-site or group training for companies?
Yes. On-site Firearm Competency Training is available on request for security companies and businesses who need to train or upskill several employees at once.
Is accommodation really free?
Yes. Students travelling from outside Pretoria are housed at no extra cost for the duration of the course, whether you're doing the 3-day single category or the 5-day combo.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
DT Academy has a 100% pass rate for students who complete the full course and attend all sessions. A rewrite opportunity is available if needed.
