Our Competent B Training course is an MQA-aligned underground mining skills programme covering the installation, maintenance, and removal of roof support in underground mining sections. It is one of the recognised Competent-level certifications in South African mining, aligned to Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) standards for safe underground work.
Unlike classroom-heavy courses, Competent B at DT Academy is delivered as full practical training at a working mine. You go underground for the entire duration of the course and train on real support systems, real ground conditions, and real hazards under the supervision of experienced mining instructors — not in a simulated classroom setting.
The course covers hazard identification, ground control principles, correct support installation technique, and the safety protocols expected of anyone working in an underground section. Because the entire week is practical, candidates leave with genuine hands-on competence rather than theory alone.

Course Information
Underground Induction & Safety Briefing
On-site induction at the mine, underground PPE checks, and a safety briefing covering ground conditions, emergency procedures, and the day-to-day rules of the section you'll be training in.
Reading Ground Conditions
Hands-on instruction in identifying hazardous ground, sounding and testing the roof and sidewalls, and recognising the early signs of fall-of-ground risk in a real working place.
Support Installation
Practical training on installing roof support correctly and safely, using the tools and materials in use at the mine, under direct instructor supervision.
Support Maintenance & Removal
Hands-on practice maintaining installed support over time and safely removing support where required, plus troubleshooting common issues encountered underground.
Practical Assessment & Certification
Independent practical competency evaluation underground, covering all skills learned during the week. Certificate briefing and guidance on submitting your CV for underground positions.
