Course Overview
What You'll Learn

Our Scaffolding (Scaffold Erector) Training course prepares you to safely erect, use, inspect, and dismantle access scaffolding on construction, mining, and industrial sites. Scaffolding is one of the most in-demand access trades in South African construction and shutdown work, and poorly erected scaffolding remains one of the leading causes of serious injury on site — which is why employers require formally certified erectors before allowing anyone near a scaffold structure.

The course is a hands-on 5-day programme combining classroom theory on the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations, and the South African National Standard SANS 10085 with practical training in scaffold component handling, drawing interpretation, foundation preparation, and erecting access scaffolding under instructor supervision. Training is aligned to SAQA Unit Standard 263245, "Erect, use and dismantle access scaffolding," NQF Level 3.

Because scaffolding is a working-at-heights activity, we strongly recommend completing our Working at Heights course first, and offer a combined Working at Heights and Scaffolding package for learners starting from scratch. Scaffolding is one of the core programmes offered under our Health & Safety training field, alongside Working at Heights, Fire Fighting, and First Aid courses. Graduates who want to progress further can continue on to our Scaffold Inspector training.

The course also covers scaffold tagging systems, load calculations, and the legal responsibilities of an erector in the event of an incident. If you are weighing up training options beyond health and safety, DT Academy also offers Mining & Machinery, Lifting Machinery, and Security Training courses from the same Pretoria Central campus.

  • OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and SANS 10085 compliance
  • Scaffold component identification and drawing interpretation
  • Foundation preparation and structural stability checks
  • Erecting access scaffolding to standard working heights
  • Scaffold inspection, tagging, and defect identification
  • Safe dismantling procedures and material handling
  • Incident response, reporting, and legal responsibilities

Flexible Training Options
On-Site Company Training & Refresher Training
Two ways DT Academy supports businesses and returning erectors beyond the standard course.
On-site Scaffolding training for companies

On-Site Training for Companies

Need to certify several employees before a shutdown or big project? On-site Scaffold Erector training is available on request — our instructors come to your construction site, mine, or industrial plant to train your team on your own scaffold stock.

Scaffold erector refresher training

Refresher Training

Your Certificate of Competence does not carry a fixed legal expiry, but many employers require scaffold erectors to complete refresher training every 2 years to stay compliant with site safety policies. We offer a shorter refresher option for existing erectors.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Scaffold Erector Training, on-site training, and refresher training.
Do I need to complete Working at Heights training first?
It is strongly recommended. Scaffolding work involves the same fall hazards covered in our Working at Heights course, and many employers require it as a prerequisite. If you have not completed it yet, DT Academy offers a combined Working at Heights and Scaffolding package.
How is the 5-day course structured?
The course runs over 5 days: 2 days of classroom theory covering the OHS Act, SANS 10085, scaffold components, and drawing interpretation, followed by 3 days of hands-on practical training erecting, inspecting, and dismantling access scaffolding under instructor supervision.
What is SAQA Unit Standard 263245?
SAQA Unit Standard 263245, "Erect, use and dismantle access scaffolding," is the NQF Level 3, 5-credit unit standard that our Scaffold Erector course is aligned to. It is the recognised benchmark for scaffold erector competence in South Africa.
Is the certificate recognised by employers?
Yes. Our training is CETA-accredited and aligned to SANS 10085 and the Construction Regulations, and is recognised by construction, mining, and industrial employers across South Africa.
Does the Certificate of Competence expire?
The Certificate of Competence itself does not have a fixed legal expiry date, but many employers and site safety policies require scaffold erectors to complete refresher training every 2 years to remain eligible to work on site.
Do you offer on-site training for companies?
Yes. On-site Scaffold Erector training is available on request for construction, mining, and industrial companies who want to train or certify groups of employees at their own site or shutdown project.
Can I progress to Scaffold Inspector after this course?
Yes. Once you hold your Scaffold Erector Certificate of Competence, you can progress to our Scaffold Inspector training, which builds on SAQA 263245 to qualify you to formally inspect access scaffolding for compliance.
Is accommodation really free?
Yes. Students travelling from outside Pretoria are housed at no extra cost for the duration of the 5-day course.
What happens if I don't pass the practical assessment?
DT Academy has a 100% pass rate for students who complete the full course. Additional practical time is provided at no extra charge if needed.
How soon can I start working after certification?
Most graduates begin applying for positions immediately after receiving their Certificate of Competence. Our job assistance programme helps connect you with construction, mining, and industrial employers, including shutdown and contract work.
