Our Forklift Operator Training course prepares you to operate counterbalance forklifts and reach trucks used in warehousing, distribution, retail, and manufacturing environments. Forklifts are among the most in-demand machines in South African logistics, moving pallets, stacking racking, and loading vehicles safely and efficiently across virtually every industry.
The course is an intensive 5-day programme combining classroom theory on forklift types, stability principles, and load charts with hands-on practical training on real forklifts. You will learn pre-operational inspections, load handling, stacking at height, and safe manoeuvring in tight warehouse and yard environments under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Forklift training is one of the core programmes offered under our Lifting Machinery training field, alongside Reach Truck, Overhead Crane, Mobile Crane, and Rigging & Slinging courses. Many students combine forklift certification with other lifting courses to broaden their employability across warehousing, construction, and industrial sectors.
The course also covers the stability triangle, attachment use, pedestrian safety, and legal requirements for operating lifting machinery in the workplace. Forklift Types & Stability Principles
Counterbalance and reach truck components, mast and hydraulic systems. The stability triangle, load charts, and centre of gravity. Attachments and their uses. Legal requirements, PPE, and pedestrian safety around lifting machinery.
Safety, Operations & Load Management
Advanced theory on safe operating procedures, risk assessment, emergency protocols. Detailed load charts, weight distribution, and environmental factors. Regulatory compliance and best practices for warehouse and yard operations.
Basic Load Handling & Manoeuvring
Hands-on cab familiarisation and pre-operational inspection. Basic manoeuvring in open areas. Picking up and placing loads. Travelling with a raised load. Introduction to racking and aisle work.
Intermediate Operations & Racking
Stacking and de-stacking pallets on racking at various heights. Manoeuvring in confined warehouse aisles. Handling uneven loads and using attachments. Supervised practice sessions to build confidence and precision.
Advanced Stacking & Assessment
Complex manoeuvring in tight spaces and ramps. Independent practical competency evaluation. Oral assessment on safety and maintenance. Certificate and operator licence card briefing, plus job application guidance.

Certificate & Operator Card Renewal
Certificates and operator licence cards issued by DT Academy are valid for 2 years from the date of issue. Once your certificate expires, it can be renewed at a cost — and because renewal doesn't require repeating the full course, our team can usually process it in the same visit.
