Operate An Excavator
Learn safe digging, trenching, loading, and material handling on a hydraulic excavator.
Our Excavator Operator Training course gives you the practical skills to operate hydraulic excavators safely and efficiently in any environment. Whether you're digging trenches for pipelines, excavating foundations on a construction site, or loading trucks on a mining site, this 5-day intensive course prepares you for real-world demands.
The course is split into two days of classroom theory — covering hydraulic systems, controls, digging techniques and safety regulations — followed by three full days of hands-on practical training, operating a real excavator on-site under close instructor supervision. This structure gives you enough repetition on the controls to build genuine confidence before your final assessment.
Excavator training is one of sixteen machine operator courses offered under our Mining & Machinery training field, alongside programmes such as TLB (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe), Front End Loader, Grader and ADT Dump Truck operator training. Many students combine Excavator with a related machine course to broaden their employability.
The course also covers attachment operation (breakers, grabs, buckets of different types), working safely near underground services, and daily maintenance routines — giving you the complete skill set employers expect from a certified excavator operator. If you're weighing up training options beyond machinery, DT Academy also offers Lifting Machinery, Security Training, and Health & Safety courses from the same Pretoria Central campus.
